At 89, Player shared his thoughts while giving lessons to a student. He criticized the current coaching methods in America, particularly the bowed wrist technique, which he believes limits golfers’ careers. “Once you adopt that, you’re done,” Player remarked.
Player also mentioned other notable golfers, including Dustin Johnson, questioning his current standing in the sport. He highlighted a worrying trend: “In America, many golf pros know less about the game than before.” His comments come at a time when the golf world is adapting to new strategies and techniques.
Despite his critique, Player saw some promise in Spieth’s recent swing and said, “He might do a lot better this week. I’m hoping he will.” Spieth, now 31, was once ranked as the top player in 2015 and has three major titles to his name, the last won in 2017 at The Open Championship.
As of now, Spieth ranks 52nd in the world. He hasn’t won since the 2022 RBC Heritage. His performances this year have been hit or miss, finishing fourth twice but also landing in the 40s and 30s in recent events. This inconsistency raises questions about his training and strategy.
