Tripura’s Chief Minister, Dr. Manik Saha, recently spoke about the state’s development during a celebration of India’s Independence Day. He emphasized the importance of passion and youth engagement in shaping a prosperous India.
Dr. Saha shared that Tripura’s economy is thriving, with a notable GDP growth of over 12% last fiscal year, positioning the state second in the Northeast region. “Let’s remember our heroes,” he urged, referencing Operation Sindoor and encouraging young people to dream big.
The CM highlighted key government initiatives aimed at supporting farmers, who are the backbone of Tripura’s economy. The state invested ₹15 crore to enhance rice cultivation across nearly 93,000 hectares. Additionally, they’ve promoted organic farming on over 20,000 hectares, provided thousands of soil health cards, and loaned ₹450 crore under the Kisan Credit Card scheme. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme has seen direct support of ₹201 crore to farmers, showcasing the government’s commitment to agriculture.
Tripura is excelling in food production, with achievements in dairy and poultry. The state produced over 247,000 tons of milk and significant quantities of meat and eggs in 2023-24. According to recent data, Tripura ranks first in the Northeast for egg production and second for both meat and fish.
Crime rates have improved too, with a drop of over 19% last year. Drug seizures also saw a sharp increase, highlighting the government’s focus on combatting narcotics.
Dr. Saha noted the need for self-reliance, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for an Atmanirbhar Bharat. Efforts like ‘Vocal for Local’ aim to promote locally made products.
In education, the introduction of the ‘Super 100’ program looks to support talented students from indigenous communities. Infrastructure improvements are underway for tourist sites, contributing to the state’s growth.
The Independence Day celebrations were vibrant, with officials like former CM Biplab Kumar Deb and Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy actively participating in community events. Deb’s blood donation at a local hospital stood out as an act of service during this occasion.
Criticism from opposition parties highlighted historical narratives around India’s freedom struggle, with figures like Gopal Chandra Roy remarking on the BJP’s past. Former leaders echoed concerns about democracy and secularism, emphasizing the need for vigilance against challenging times.
