Just a day after the report, it was revealed that Baker made calls to nearby businesses and a reporter, seeking surveillance footage of an altercation that occurred on a Sunday night. In this incident, a 29-year-old off-duty female officer accused him and others of assault.
Baker has been on leave, first administrative and then medical, since June. During that time, he fatally shot his partner, Officer Krystal Rivera, in what authorities labeled as an accidental shooting. No criminal charges were filed against him.
While on leave, Baker was still allowed to keep his service weapon and badge, but now that Superintendent Larry Snelling has stripped him of his powers, he no longer has access to these. However, it’s important to note that he hasn’t been fired; he remains an employee of the Chicago Police Department.
After Rivera’s death, investigations uncovered over ten complaints against Baker since he joined in 2021. These complaints ranged from excessive force to unprofessional conduct. It’s notable that at least one of these complaints was upheld by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA).
