How a Sedentary Lifestyle Increases Your Risk of Chronic Diseases: What You Need to Know

Ebenezer Desmond Yaw Dzordzordzi, who leads the Physical Education, Health, and Sports Department at Manya Krobo Senior High School, recently shared some important insights about physical activity. He stressed that not engaging in enough physical activity could increase the risk of serious health issues. “A sedentary lifestyle raises the chances of developing chronic diseases,” he explained.

Dzordzordzi spoke during a national conference attended by over 200 catechists and evangelists of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Ghana. The conference focused on “Care for Creation,” emphasizing that our health is interconnected with our environment.

He highlighted several health risks tied to a lack of physical activity, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, obesity, as well as mental health issues like depression and anxiety. “Our physical well-being greatly depends on our level of activity,” he said.

The benefits of staying active are vast. Regular physical activity can help manage weight, boost mood, and enhance energy levels. It also supports cognitive functions such as thinking and learning as we grow older. Dzordzordzi emphasized the importance of being active, particularly as people age.

In addition, Dzordzordzi raised concerns about the use of agro-chemicals in farming. He warned that these substances not only harm the ecosystem but also pose risks to human health through food and water contamination. “It’s vital for farmers to return to traditional methods, using hoes and tractors, alongside organic fertilizers,” he advised.

This advice resonates with recent data highlighting a growing trend in healthy living. According to a 2023 survey by the World Health Organization, many countries report an increase in chronic health conditions linked to sedentary lifestyles. Investing in fitness and sustainable farming practices can lead to numerous benefits, for both individuals and communities.

Staying active and being mindful of our environment are crucial steps toward better health. As we navigate modern life, making time for physical activity can significantly impact our overall well-being.
