At Arkansas Tech University, President Dr. Russell Jones kicked off first-year student orientation on August 16, 2025, sharing his key advice: step outside your comfort zone. “You’ve already taken a big step by being here. But will you participate in more activities? Will you join clubs or cheer for our teams?” he asked the new students.

William Vick of Maumelle felt a unique connection to ATU, as his grandfather graduated from the university. He shared, “It’s like I’ve been preparing for this my entire life. Every choice led me here.” William is aiming to become a military analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense and is excited about joining several student organizations to enhance his college experience.
Another student, Hattie Tarte from Dardanelle, is also a legacy, being the third generation in her family to attend ATU. Reflecting on the day, she said, “It was hectic but fun. Everyone was so kind.” Hattie plans to study pre-law and participate in the choral music program while exploring fraternity and sorority opportunities.
The excitement around campus is palpable, especially for newer staff members like Amy Pennington, vice president for student affairs. She expressed enthusiasm for welcoming students, noting that they are not just numbers but part of a community. “This week is your chance to find your people,” said Pennington. “You’re starting a journey that goes far beyond textbooks.
