Dan Tana, the founder of the famous Dan Tana’s restaurant in West Hollywood, passed away in Serbia at the age of 90. The restaurant, known for its classic Italian dishes and celebrity clientele, has been a favorite since it opened in 1964.

Born Dobrivoje Tanasijević near Belgrade, Tana moved to Canada to play professional soccer before pursuing acting in the U.S. He started as a dishwasher and worked his way up to a maitre d’, eventually opening his own restaurant to provide a late-night dining option for Hollywood stars.

While not an immediate success, Dan Tana’s gained fame after notable patrons like Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor began to frequent it. The restaurant became a cultural icon in the 1970s and is known for its red-and-white tablecloths and a vibe that feels both welcoming and nostalgic.

Interestingly, Dan Tana’s menu focuses on comfort food staples like fettuccine Alfredo and chicken Parmesan, rather than fine dining dishes. Critic Jonathan Gold reviewed the restaurant in 2016, acknowledging its “ordinary” food but highlighting its unique charm. He noted that the experience of dining there is what keeps people returning.

Despite the recent closure of many historic restaurants in Los Angeles, Dan Tana’s remains a cherished spot. Local historian Alison Martino shared that the restaurant’s enduring appeal lies in its genuine warmth and history. Many long-time staff members continue to serve, ensuring that returning guests feel like family.

In a touching tribute, Martino raised a toast in Tana’s honor at the restaurant, urging guests to celebrate his life. Tana’s legacy lives on through the restaurant, which continues to attract both locals and tourists seeking a taste of Hollywood’s past.
