The University of North Dakota is mourning the loss of former student-athlete Deng Mayar, who passed away on August 16, 2025, at the age of 22.
Deng played for the UND men’s basketball teams during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. He had appeared in 42 games, averaging 5.7 points per game. His contributions helped the Fighting Hawks reach the Summit League Tournament Semifinals in 2025.
Coach Paul Sather expressed heartfelt condolences, stating, “Our hearts are broken. Deng was a wonderful person with a big heart. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.”
Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, Deng played for Howard Junior College before joining UND. His kindness and gentle spirit won him friends both on and off the court.
In light of this tragic loss, the university is offering support to students who may be struggling with grief. The University Counseling Center is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students can schedule appointments by calling 701.777.2127.
