After scoring 16 Emmy nominations for its second season, the cast and creators of The Last of Us reflected on what made this season so impactful during HBO Max’s Nominee Celebration.
Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Kaitlyn Dever, Joe Pantoliano, and editor Timothy Good joined co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann at the event. A major talking point was the emotional weight of the season’s second episode, where Dever’s character, Abby, takes the life of Pascal’s Joel.
Pascal shared how immersed they were in the story. He said, “You get so lost in it that you forget how viewers will react to episode two.” For him, the stakes felt obvious since he had been living with the storyline for so long. “I thought everyone knew this was going to happen.”
For many fans, Joel’s death was shocking and marked a turning point. This second episode introduces Abby as a central figure driven by vengeance after losing her father.
Dever’s casting left Pascal confident she’d excel. He noted, “I knew she’d knock it out of the park. We got to enjoy the intense scene together, which was really fun.”
Pascal and Ramsey, whose characters have a strained relationship, felt the absence between seasons. “We hadn’t been together physically for a long time. Reuniting while our characters were apart was oddly painful. It added a unique layer to our performances,” he explained.
Mazin praised Dever’s performance in the tense scene, expressing amazement at her emotional depth. Dever reciprocated the compliment, particularly regarding the heavy moment where Ramsey’s Ellie mourns Joel’s death. “I had to leave the room. I couldn’t watch it,” she confessed.
When preparing for her role, Dever focused on portraying Abby’s grief and complexity. “I wanted audiences to feel her pain and understand her obsession and calculations when finally confronting Joel,” she said.
She emphasized that even in her character’s darker moments, there’s an essential human element. “After killing Joel, Abby realizes she doesn’t feel better. Now she has to live with her choices.” This nuanced portrayal invites viewers to see Abby not merely as a villain but as a deeply flawed character grappling with her emotions.
According to a recent survey by Entertainment Tonight, 78% of viewers found the character development in The Last of Us to be compelling. This underscores the resonance of the show’s themes of loss and revenge in today’s society.
In a world where stories of grief and morality resonate more than ever, The Last of Us continues to offer a profound narrative experience. It reminds us that our choices carry weight, and understanding each character’s journey enriches the story for everyone.
