Nvidia’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service is about to get a major upgrade. This September, users will have access to cutting-edge Blackwell GPUs, effectively giving them the power of an RTX 5080 in the cloud. With this, players can stream their favorite games with impressive graphics and speed, all for $20 a month.
One exciting feature is “Install-to-Play.” This means gamers can install their own games without waiting for Nvidia to approve them. According to Andrew Fear, Nvidia’s product marketing director, this could double the number of games available on the platform. While gamers can only install titles that opt into Valve’s Steam Cloud Play, that still equates to a staggering 2,352 games right from the get-go.
Of course, not every game will launch instantly—players will need to download and install games each time unless they pay for extra storage. However, Nvidia promises speedy installs because their servers are connected to Valve’s. Plus, if you have a reliable internet connection, you can even stream games at 5K quality and up to 120 frames per second.
A special mode called Cinematic Quality Streaming is on offer too. It aims to improve visuals by reducing color bleed and enhancing details, streaming at higher quality than before. For streaming enthusiasts using a Steam Deck OLED, there’s good news: you can now play games at a native 90Hz refresh rate.
Still, there are some lingering questions about performance. While the RTX 5080 offers promising specs, it’s not guaranteed users will always get that level of power for every game they play. Nvidia ensures they won’t raise prices immediately, at least not until they assess the performance demands of the new hardware.
Interestingly, Nvidia is also testing how GeForce Now integrates with Discord. Soon, players may be able to jump into games like Fortnite without any downloads, which reflects a growing trend in cloud gaming. The instant-play model aims to replicate the experience of “try before you buy,” a concept that has drawn interest in the gaming community.
Despite the hype, notable titles like those from Sony and Rockstar are still absent from the platform. However, with the potential for new partnerships and features, the future of cloud gaming looks bright. Enthusiasts will definitely want to keep an eye on these developments as they unfold.
