Eight Pacific sleeper sharks made a surprising appearance when researchers dropped a cow carcass into the deep waters of the South China Sea. This dive into the ocean, about 5,344 feet down, near Hainan Island, provided a glimpse into the feeding habits of these elusive sharks.

Studying Pacific sleeper sharks is not easy. These sharks inhabit cold, dark waters across the North Pacific, from Alaska to Baja California and even parts of tropical regions. Their wide-ranging lifestyle complicates tracking efforts, but events like this help scientists learn more about them.

Researchers staged this experiment to mimic a natural phenomenon known as a whale fall. In nature, when a large creature like a whale dies and sinks, it creates a feast for various deep-sea creatures. By placing a carcass on the seafloor, scientists can observe how different species interact with the food source. The sudden influx of nutrients attracts scavengers, who arrive in waves.

Dr. Han Tian from Sun Yat-sen University led the study, collaborating with several research teams, including the Institute of Acoustics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

During the observation, the sharks exhibited interesting behaviors. Larger sharks, measuring over 8.9 feet, went straight for the carcass, while smaller ones held back, showcasing a social hierarchy. This kind of behavior shows how competition and feeding strategies develop even at great depths.

This study marked the first recorded sighting of Pacific sleeper sharks in the South China Sea, an area previously considered outside their typical range. Historical data revealed that sightings had occurred as far south as the Solomon Islands and Palau, hinting at the shark’s adaptability.

Interestingly, the footage captured social interactions among sharks, illustrating the unspoken rules that govern their feeding. Researchers have previously noted similar patterns among other species, like oceanic whitetip and tiger sharks, allowing for fascinating comparisons in behavior.

Another finding worth noting was the discovery of suspended particles exiting the sharks’ spiracles, small openings behind their eyes. This suggests these structures help them breathe while eating, revealing a much-adapted feeding strategy.

Moreover, several sharks were observed with copepods, tiny parasites that often infect them. Research in Alaska found common infections in Pacific sleeper sharks that affect their corneas, highlighting the importance of non-visual senses in darkness.

As scavengers converged around the carcass, it became apparent that these interactions are crucial for understanding deeper food webs. The community that gathers around such a meal can evolve by the hour, supporting a variety of marine life in ongoing cycles.

This study sheds light on the dynamics within deep-sea ecosystems and emphasizes the importance of innovative research methods in uncovering hidden behaviors in these mysterious ocean dwellers. The findings are detailed in the Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Research journal.
