Prepare for Prices: What Minnesota State Fair Food Favorites Could Cost You This Year

Visitors heading to this year’s Minnesota State Fair may notice some significant price increases on their favorite foods.

Tino Lettieri runs a stand called Tino’s, where he’s been selling pizza on a stick and calzones for over 30 years. He recalls when his items cost around $4 in 1990. Today, they sell for $15. “As prices rise, I often wonder when enough is enough,” he shared. Lettieri mentioned that food costs have jumped by 30% to 40%. He also struggles with labor costs and prefers to pay his workers fairly to avoid high turnover.

Lettieri isn’t the only one feeling the pinch. Dennis Fraleig, who owns Butcher Boys and sells London Broil Steak Sandwiches, has faced similar frustrations. “Beef prices are up by $1.50 to $1.75 per pound since last year,” he noted.

Rides at the fair are also becoming pricier. Just seven years ago, a round trip on the Skyride cost $6; now it’s only good for a one-way trip.

Despite these price hikes, both Lettieri and Fraleig assure customers they’re still getting value. Lettieri pointed out that a pizza on a stick is now much larger than it used to be. “It used to be tiny, now it’s substantial,” he said. Fraleig emphasized the quality of preparation: “Nothing is frozen; we prep everything fresh, which requires significant labor.”

To help ease costs, the fair offers a Blue Ribbon Book filled with coupons for various vendors and rides, available for just $5. Additionally, fairgoers can buy discounted adult entry tickets online for $17 until Wednesday—the price goes up to $20 starting Thursday, and kids under four can enter for free.

The rising costs reflect broader economic trends. According to recent statistics from the USDA, food prices overall increased by about 10% this year. Many vendors, like Lettieri and Fraleig, are doing their best to balance quality and affordability.

In social media, fair enthusiasts are sharing their experiences, highlighting both the rising costs and the unique culinary options available. It seems that while prices climb, the love for the fair remains steadfast.
