An American doctor, Dr. Mimi Syed, has faced a setback in her mission to help in Gaza. After years of volunteering there and sharing stories about the challenges, she was denied entry by Israel. “We were just denied,” Dr. Syed said from a hotel in Jordan, without any explanation for the decision.
Dr. Syed is one of a few American doctors willing to speak out about the grim realities in Gaza. Back home in Olympia, Washington, she works as an emergency room physician and has even testified before Congress. Earlier this year, she met with UN Secretary General António Guterres to share her experiences.
In her view, the less foreign medical staff in Gaza, the less exposed the situation becomes. “When doctors go in and we expose what’s happening, they prefer to have fewer of us there,” she remarked.
This year alone, Dr. Syed intended to start her third mission in Gaza, which would have lasted three to four weeks. However, she was stopped just as Israel prepared for a new ground invasion. Reports of starvation and worsening conditions in Gaza have increased, highlighting the urgent need for medical aid.
Interestingly, the US State Department has recently paused all medical-humanitarian visas from Palestinian applicants, citing a review of the processes involved. This change followed claims by a far-right pundit that Gazans were being brought to the US, which stoked controversy.
Dr. Syed packed her suitcase full of baby formula, protein bars, and medical supplies for her trip. Now, she faces returning home earlier than planned, with her supplies going to waste. “They are limiting foreign workers to control the narrative of what’s happening,” she stated.
Her situation reflects a broader trend of restrictions on humanitarian aid in conflict zones, where the voices of those trying to help are often silenced. As conflicts escalate, many are calling for more transparency and support for medical professionals like Dr. Syed who bravely share the truth.
