Two local students from Dunmore and Valley View high schools graduated this spring from the University of Success, joining a total of 17 new graduates. This program has been nurturing high school students for nearly 25 years, guiding them toward college readiness.
The University of Success, sponsored by the University of Scranton, offers students a structured four-year plan. It focuses on key skills through mentorship and enrichment courses, covering topics like study techniques, public speaking, math, science, and even SAT preparation. There’s also an emphasis on wellness and financial aid, helping students prepare for both life and education.
This year, 15 graduates will head to various colleges and universities, with five choosing the University of Scranton. Two students will enlist in the military. Notable graduates include:
- Amiya Brown, Dunmore High School, Lincoln University.
- Christina Denney, Mountain View High School, University of Pittsburgh.
- Dawson Reed Machado, Valley View High School, Penn State Scranton.
- Mikayla Sansky, Mountain View High School, Marywood University.
The University of Success began in 1996, with its first graduating class in 2001. It stands out because it is free for students, primarily funded by generous corporate and foundation donations from organizations like AT&T, Dime Bank, and Fidelity Bank.
The program kicks off with a two-week Summer Academy for incoming ninth graders, held this year from July 6-18 at the university. This immersive experience lays the groundwork for their journey ahead.
Recent statistics highlight the importance of such programs. According to the National College Access Network, students involved in mentorship and enrichment programs are 80% more likely to enroll in college compared to their peers. This significant impact shows how vital a support system can be for young learners.
