A US Navy sailor, Jinchao Wei, is facing serious consequences after being found guilty of espionage. A jury convicted him for selling sensitive military information to a Chinese intelligence officer.
Wei, who was also charged with conspiring to commit espionage and unlawfully exporting technical data, is set to be sentenced on December 1. Notably, he was acquitted of naturalization fraud. According to Adam Gordon, a US attorney, Wei’s actions were a “serious betrayal” of trust within the military. He stressed that trading military secrets for cash endangered the lives of fellow sailors and threatened national security.
Wei was arrested on August 2, 2023, just as he reported for his shift at Naval Base San Diego. A machinist’s mate by trade, he was responsible for maintaining equipment aboard the USS Essex. After his arrest, he pleaded not guilty initially, but later admitted to selling confidential manuals to the FBI, reportedly saying, “I’m screwed.”
The Justice Department shared that Wei’s recruitment by the Chinese officer began via social media in February 2022. Over the next 18 months, he provided the officer with pictures and videos of the USS Essex, revealing the locations of several naval vessels. He also shared thousands of pages of classified technical information and received over $12,000 for his collaboration.
In a troubling trend, just as Wei was detained, another sailor, Wenheng Zhao, was arrested for a similar offense involving sensitive military data. Zhao pleaded guilty last year to working with a Chinese intelligence officer and was sentenced to more than two years in prison.
The recent uptick in espionage cases involving military personnel raises significant concerns about security and trust within the armed forces. Experts warn that even small breaches can have vast implications for national safety. The cases highlight the need for increased vigilance and better protective measures against potential recruitment by foreign intelligence entities.
