The Westmoreland Food Bank provided around 5 million meals in 2024. While officials hope demand will start to go down, they are preparing to enhance their services with an upcoming expansion on Devonshire Drive in Salem.
Groundbreaking for this expansion took place recently, marking the start of a project that has been in the works for nearly three years. Director Jennifer Miller noted that planning began back in 2018, but progress slowed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With a combination of $2.5 million from the American Rescue Plan and an additional $800,000 in federal funds, the food bank will boost its refrigeration capacity, expand volunteer workspace, and add a new on-site pantry. “Upgrading our refrigeration is crucial,” Miller stated. “It will help us get fresh produce to those who need it most in Westmoreland County.”
County Commissioner Sean Kertes emphasized the value of the American Rescue Plan and other funding sources. “These funds let us focus on community-wide benefits rather than just budgets,” he explained. “We want everyone, regardless of background, to enjoy a healthy quality of life.”
Construction is expected to start within 30 days, and Miller hopes to finish the project by the end of 2026, possibly sooner. With recent cuts to the federal Emergency Food Assistance Program and planned reductions to SNAP, the food bank anticipates more clients in the near future. “We expect the number of people we serve to rise,” she noted. “We rely on around 5,000 dedicated volunteers to help about 10,000 households each month, but we always need more support.”
County Commissioner Doug Chew recently shared a personal connection to the issue. He learned that a former classmate was using the food bank’s services. “It’s surprising how many people we encounter who rely on what the food bank offers,” he said. “We’re fortunate to have this resource in Westmoreland County.”
