Google’s Future Tech: What You Won’t See Anytime Soon – No Tablets, Smart Rings, Flip Phones, or Glasses!

Google is taking a step back from the foldable phone trend for now. Unlike competitors like Samsung and Motorola, which are diving headfirst into flip-style phones reminiscent of the classic Motorola Razr, Google has decided not to join the race. They’re also holding off on developing a smart ring and have put their tablet revamp on pause until they find a clear path forward in that category.

In a recent interview, Rick Osterloh, a senior VP at Google, shared that they are still uncertain about reintroducing smart glasses. However, he emphasized that this technology still holds promise for the company’s future. If Google decides to launch new smart glasses, they might lean toward a design that doesn’t rely on displays. Osterloh and his colleague, Shakil Barkat, hinted that such glasses could pair interestingly with a more compact phone, possibly one that folds out for entertainment.

The memory of the original Google Glass still looms large. Launched with much fanfare, it stumbled in the market and is often cited as one of tech’s biggest flops. Nevertheless, in today’s landscape, where companies like Meta are successfully pushing smart eyewear, a new Google version might receive a warmer reception.

As for changes to Google’s Pixel phone designs, there is a possibility coming soon. Ivy Ross, Google’s design chief, revealed that they typically explore new design styles every two to three years. Given that cycle, we could see some shifts in Pixel phone aesthetics in the near future.
