The University Prep Panthers are gearing up for a promising football season. Last year, they finished with a 4-6 record, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. They battled hard, going 3-1 in City League play. However, an unfortunate incident during their last regular-season game against Westinghouse led to suspensions that affected their chances in the playoffs.
After the regular season, they bounced back in the PIAA playoffs, winning against Punxsutawney. They fell short in the regional championship against Clearfield, but the experience was invaluable. Coach Lou Berry noted that the players gained confidence, proving they could compete at the state level. This hard-earned momentum has driven them through the offseason, motivating the team to work harder and stick together.
Several players, including wide receivers Zion Hauser and Micah Saunders, are ready to lead the charge. Both were recognized as All-City League selections last year. The team’s sophomore quarterback, Daimere Adair, is back after an impressive year. He completed 18 of 20 passes for nearly 350 yards in that last playoff game—an exciting glimpse of what’s to come.
“The bar is set high for him now,” Berry said, acknowledging the expectations for Adair this season. “But we’re starting fresh. Every year is a new team.”
The running back position will see new faces, with Me’Laun Stampler and Amir Pollard stepping in. They’ll run behind a solid offensive line, led by center Dre’Quan McClain-Street and guard Dion Williams, who stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 380 pounds. Berry has high hopes for Williams’ performance this year, noting, “He moves like a deer for his size.”
Defensively, the Panthers will rely on strong players like linebacker Taishaun Brown and safety Damondtae Stevenson, another All-City League selection. Berry emphasizes the importance of respect within the program, saying, “It starts with loving your teammates and doing the little things right.”
The Panthers will kick off their season against Hampton at Cupples Stadium on August 22, followed by a rematch with Hickory. Last year, they lost both games and are eager for redemption.
In terms of team makeup, University Prep draws players from University Prep, Pittsburgh Science and Technology, and Obama Academy. Established in 2011, the program has claimed City League titles in 2011, 2013, and 2016. The lessons learned from past seasons pave the way for this year’s aspirations.
As the team builds toward their first game, their focus remains clear: work hard, respect each other, and aim for growth. This collective mindset could transform their challenges into triumphs as the season unfolds.
