Historically, the relationship between Canada and the U.S. has had its ups and downs. In 2024, Canada swiftly implemented counter-tariffs on about $21.7 billion worth of American goods. This was during Justin Trudeau’s term when tensions rose due to U.S. tariff increases and concerns about drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl.

Recent data shows a worrying trend: U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized over 43 pounds of fentanyl at the northern border last year and an additional 58 pounds this year alone. Such issues have influenced trade policies and negotiations.
