LAFAYETTE PARISH — Get ready to lace up your sneakers! It’s time for the fourth annual Sickle Cell Walk and Free Health Expo. This event not only raises awareness about sickle cell disease but also offers some fun prizes along the way.
The walk is organized by Shekaul Henry, a Nurse Practitioner and Chairman of the Acadiana Black Nurses Association. According to Shekaul, this year’s event is set for Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Graham Brown Memorial Park in Lafayette.
This event features two parts: a morning walk followed by a health expo. Registration begins at 6:45 a.m., with the walk kicking off at 8 a.m. The fee to join is $30, and you can register on-site or through Eventbrite.
The Free Health Expo runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It includes free health screenings, talks from guest speakers, and refreshments. This year, the expo will focus on several health issues that impact the community. Besides sickle cell disease, there will be discussions on lupus and prostate cancer, both of which disproportionately affect African Americans.
As part of the health expo, attendees can receive free prostate cancer screenings. The results will be mailed directly to your home so you can discuss them with your doctor.
Community events like this serve a dual purpose: they raise funds and increase awareness. Shekaul emphasizes that 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Sickle Cell Association of South Louisiana. This kind of community initiative is crucial because it connects people with important resources while supporting those affected by sickle cell disease.
