Exciting New Mental Health Hospital Proposed for Oxford: What You Need to Know

Plans are underway for a grand new mental health hospital and research campus in Headington, Oxford. Valued at £750 million, this project from the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH) aims to advance mental health care and brain science.

The new facility will focus on patient wellness. It will have modern inpatient spaces and areas that connect with nature, supporting mental health recovery. Interestingly, the original Warneford Hospital has been operating since 1826, making it one of the oldest hospitals still in use in the NHS.

Supporting Needs

The design will foster accessibility for those with dementia and sensory needs. There’s also a plan for space dedicated to biotech and pharmaceutical start-ups, reinforcing the connection between healthcare and innovation.

OUH hopes to secure government funding for this ambitious project. They claim it will create a “world-class research campus” tackling critical issues in mental health. Construction is projected to start in late 2028, with the hospital set to open in 2031. Meanwhile, the Meadow Unit, designed for young people with severe mental health challenges, began operations in 2023, aiming to offer localized treatment.
