In 2006, McDonald’s introduced the snack wrap, a tasty handheld treat made with a tortilla, fried chicken, lettuce, and cheese. I was just a kid, begging my mom for one every time we drove by. But by 2016, McDonald’s removed it from the menu, leaving many fans heartbroken.
Recently, the snack wrap made a comeback, just as other fast-food chains like Popeyes started offering their versions. Now, it feels like every fast-food restaurant has a wrap option.
Not all snack wraps are equal, so I set out to taste as many as I could and see which one truly stands out. After sampling various options, I found a surprising winner.
Testing the Snack Wraps
Over a few weeks, I visited several fast-food joints—McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC, and more. My goal was to try every wrap featuring fried chicken in a tortilla. To keep my taste buds fresh, I tried two places at a time.
The basic idea remained the same across the chains: a fried chicken tender wrapped in a tortilla. However, the ingredients varied. For instance, Popeyes added pickles, while McDonald’s opted for lettuce. I focused on how well the toppings and sauces came together, along with three key factors: soft tortillas, tasty chicken, and fresh toppings.
My Rankings
Here’s how the wraps stacked up:
6th Place: KFC’s Chicken Wrap
KFC’s wrap featured a dry, stale tortilla and uninspired toppings. The chicken, though seasoned like KFC’s famous fried chicken, couldn’t save it due to its sogginess.
5th Place: Burger King’s Royal Crispy Wrap
This wrap felt off from the start. The chicken tender had a weird texture, making it hard to enjoy even with the added lettuce and tomato.
4th Place: Arby’s Chicken Wrap
Unlike other wraps, Arby’s used a thick slice of cheddar. While the ranch sauce was a highlight, the soggy lettuce and bland chicken didn’t do it any favors.
3rd Place: McDonald’s Snack Wrap
The McDonald’s version brought back memories. It includes shredded cheese and lettuce, but the chicken lacked the tenderness I expected. It was good but didn’t quite make the top of my list.
2nd Place: Popeyes Chicken Wrap
Popeyes offered a solid wrap loaded with crunchy pickles and their well-loved chicken strip. The honey mustard spread added a fantastic sweetness and tang.
1st Place: Sonic’s Chicken Strip Wrap
Sonic’s wrap stole the show. It was packed with juicy chicken, shredded cheese, fresh lettuce, and tomato. The choice of sauces enhanced the flavors perfectly, making it a delightful surprise.
A Culinary Trend
This snack wrap trend isn’t just a random occurrence. Recent surveys show an uptick in fast-food customers craving versatile options like wraps. Sometimes perceived as a healthier alternative, these creations give chains a chance to showcase their unique flavors.
It’ll be interesting to see how this trend evolves. Will McDonald’s continue to lead, or will competitors find new ways to win over fans? With choices growing in variety and flavor, the future looks bright for snack wraps everywhere.
