Cal State San Marcos kicked off the fall semester with over 17,000 students, celebrating its biggest freshman class ever, with more than 2,700 newcomers. Final enrollment numbers will come after the census in October.
During her recent address, President Ellen Neufeldt expressed her enthusiasm for the new academic year. She reminded everyone of the university’s purpose: the power of higher education and the mission at CSUSM.
Neufeldt also shared some exciting achievements from the past year and outlined future plans. A major focus is CSUSM’s ambitious fundraising campaign, aiming to raise $200 million. This money will support scholarships, expand faculty initiatives, and enhance the university’s infrastructure.
“This isn’t just about money; it’s about making a significant difference,” she said.
New Buildings and Facilities
CSUSM is moving forward with the Integrated Science and Engineering (ISE) Building, which broke ground on July 31. This $110 million project will meet the growing demand for STEM programs and new engineering majors. Covering over 70,000 square feet, this new three-story building will be the first academic facility funded by public money since 2014. It’s set to open in fall 2027.
Housing Developments
The new University Village Housing and Dining Project has been named Black Oak Hall and Kwíila Dining. The names reflect local heritage, with “Kwíila” meaning “acorn” in Luiseño, honoring the area’s tribal roots. The project will welcome students by fall 2026.
College Rankings
CSUSM earned a spot on Money magazine’s “Best Colleges in America 2025” list, receiving a strong 4.5-star rating. The ranking evaluates schools based on graduation rates, costs, financial aid, and alumni salaries, highlighting CSUSM’s key strengths.
Welcoming Events and Culture
The university kicked off its annual Weeks of Welcome on August 22. This series features various events designed to help students connect and start the school year on a positive note.
In addition, the Arts & Lectures series has announced a diverse lineup for the fall. Five events are scheduled, showcasing various speakers and performances, giving students and the community a chance to engage with the arts.
