Search for Missing RPG Designer: What Happened After Their Crowdfunded Game Took the Spotlight?

The challenges of backing a crowdfunded game aren’t new. It’s common for projects to fall short of expectations due to inexperienced teams. However, the tabletop RPG Grimwild presents unique difficulties.

This game was crowdfunded in 2024 on BackerKit, securing $40,000 from 590 supporters, followed by an additional $47,000 for a hardcover edition. The game’s promise was a “cinematic narrative rules system” focused more on drama than rigid rules.

While updates mention some production delays, the anticipated delivery window of July has come and gone without any books arriving. A recent update on the game’s community Discord revealed a troubling situation. The designer, J.D. Maxwell, has been unreachable for weeks.

Although his team was initially unconcerned, hoping he was taking a much-needed break, they have since grown anxious. Colleagues Per Janke and Luke Saunders have been trying to locate Maxwell but have hit dead ends. Missing a project lead for this long is generally alarming, leaving backers wondering if the game will ever be completed. However, the game is actually finished, and backers have been able to play a downloadable version for months.

The snag lies in logistics. Because the manufacturing accounts are in Maxwell’s name, the team can’t move forward without his go-ahead. The website for Oddity Press, the entity responsible for Grimwild, is currently down. It’s a frustrating situation for everyone involved.

Experts in crowdfunding, like Ethan Mollick, a professor at the Wharton School, note that communication breakdowns can be a major red flag. “Transparency is key in these projects,” he states. “When backers feel left in the dark, trust erodes quickly.”

Recent data suggests that nearly 35% of crowdfunded projects fail to deliver. For backers, it can feel like a gamble. In the case of Grimwild, the community is rallying. They’re asking for anyone with information on Maxwell to reach out to the Discord moderators.

Until there’s clarity, the project’s future remains uncertain, but the game’s community remains hopeful. They’ll continue to support their project, seeking updates and a resolution.
