A man from Wisconsin recently found himself in hot water after faking his own drowning while kayaking. This strange case of deception led to his conviction for obstructing officers, resulting in a sentence of 89 days in jail.
Ryan Borgwardt, 45, attempted to escape his life to meet a woman in Georgia. He initially pleaded not guilty but changed his plea to no contest, agreeing to pay $30,000 to cover the costs incurred by law enforcement during the search for him. A no contest plea means he didn’t admit guilt, but the court treated it as such.
In court, Borgwardt expressed regret for his actions, saying he felt remorse for the pain he caused his family. Even though prosecutors recommended a lighter sentence of 45 days, the judge opted for 89 days—matching the time Borgwardt misled authorities about his disappearance.

His wife, who he had been married to for 22 years, filed for divorce shortly after the incident. The local district attorney pointed out that his actions, including taking out a life insurance policy before disappearing, showcased his selfish motives.
