KOKOMO, Ind. — Indiana University Kokomo celebrated its dedicated faculty during an annual fall convocation, recognizing their contributions in service, research, and teaching.
Mark Meng, an associate professor in hospitality and tourism, received the prestigious Virgil Hunt Distinguished Service Award. As a founding member of his department, Meng has been instrumental in establishing the hospitality and tourism program. He’s also taken an active role in over 30 committees, lending his expertise across the university.
Chancellor Mark Canada praised Meng for leading students on educational trips to places like Churchill Downs and Walt Disney World, while also connecting them with local partners for real-world projects at venues such as the Grissom Air Museum.
On the academic front, Meng serves on the editorial board of a leading journal and is a board member for the International Society of Travel and Tourism Educators. He received the Heidi Sung Achievement Award for his work in the field.
Dmitriy Chulkov, professor of business analytics and economics, was honored with the senior faculty scholarship award. Dean Chittibabu Govindarajulu noted Chulkov’s prolific output, with nine publications in 2024 alone, covering topics like corporate social responsibility and executive turnover. His research spans both social sciences and business analytics, making significant contributions to his field.
Chulkov has presented his findings at conferences worldwide, including in South Korea and Japan, and has secured several grants to support his research, demonstrating the global relevance of his work.
Jamie Oslawski-Lopez, an assistant professor of sociology, was awarded the junior faculty scholarship award. Her research focuses on gender and class issues, with articles published in prominent journals. Oslawski-Lopez has actively shared her insights at multiple conferences and is currently working on additional projects, including a manuscript under review for the Journal of Marriage and Family.
A group of faculty members—Nicholas Baxter, Minda Douglas, Hong Liu, Melinda Stanley, and Joseph Waters—were honored with IU Trustees Teaching Awards for their dedication to enhancing student learning.
Baxter stood out for his leadership in the Honors Program and commitment to adapting teaching methods to suit various student needs. Douglas was recognized for her innovative approaches, including international travel opportunities and undergraduate research initiatives. Liu’s teaching practices, which include thorough assessments linked to student outcomes, earned her recognition in the field of computer science education.
Stanley has been involved in professional development, presenting at numerous conferences, while Waters has played a key role in designing a new Master of Mental Health Counseling program, utilizing effective teaching strategies.
