NEW BRITAIN, CT. — A group of around 280 food service workers at Connecticut state universities might be gearing up for a strike. They’ve been in talks with Sodexo since March, seeking higher wages to combat rising inflation.
Recently, some workers even held a protest at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). They made it clear: if negotiations falter, they could walk off the job, leaving students uncertain about their meals.
Frankie Petraccone, a CCSU dining hall worker and a former student, reflected on his situation. “When I started, this was a good job,” he said. “But since the pandemic, it’s been tough.” He mentioned having up to three jobs at one point, still struggling to make ends meet. “I love my job, but I need fair wages and health benefits,” Frankie added.
Sodexo offered $26 an hour, claiming it’s one of the best rates in the state. But workers feel this is not enough. “We’re prepared to fight for a fair contract,” said Joshua Stanley, the union’s Secretary and Treasurer. He emphasized their goal: to reach an agreement without disrupting students.
Students like Jacquelin Mathlin support the workers. “What they’re doing is right,” she said. “They should stand up for their rights.”
While the negotiations proceed, Sodexo has assured the university that they are preparing for any service interruptions. The situation at CCSU reflects a broader trend in labor negotiations across the country, where workers are increasingly advocating for better pay and benefits in the face of rising living costs.
