The Giants have announced their 53-man roster, and the team members are sharing their thoughts.
John Schmeelk: I’ve been predicting the roster for over a decade, and it’s rare to get it all right. The front office and coaches know these players better than anyone else. Typically, I aim for 25 offensive players, 25 defensive players, and 3 specialists. This year, the numbers shifted a bit.
The Giants kept 26 players on offense and 24 on defense. Notably, Gunner Olszewski is classified as an offensive player, but he’s likely to shine on special teams. Also, the Giants have only three safeties. They might add a fourth soon, possibly cutting another offensive player to make space.
On the offensive side, one standout is Beaux Collins. He’s the only undrafted free agent to make the team. His spot as the sixth wide receiver shows the team values his speed and size, worried that another team might take him if he hit waivers. He’ll benefit from learning behind experienced players without the pressure to perform right away.
Thomas Fidone II is another young talent. He has the skills to be a strong tight end in the future, but he’s fourth in line behind seasoned players like Theo Johnson and Daniel Bellinger. This structure allows him to build his skills as a blocker while developing his abilities further down the road.
Interestingly, the Giants chose to keep only three running backs. Despite Dante “Turbo” Miller’s impressive offseason, they’re confident in Tyrone Tracy Jr., Devin Singletary, and Cam Skattebo. Skattebo missed part of training camp, but he’s back on the field now, which the team seems to trust.
It’s uncommon for the Giants to keep 11 offensive linemen, especially with Josh Ezeudu on injured reserve but designated to return. Keeping this many linemen signals they believe in their depth. Injuries are expected, and they want to avoid a situation like two years ago when they had to sign Justin Pugh mid-season. With 10 active linemen, including Greg Van Roten, they have solid backup options at center, tackle, and guard.
Marcus Mbow and Jaxson Dart represent the future of the offensive line and quarterback positions, respectively. This mix of veterans and developing talent positions the Giants well for both immediate success and long-term growth.
Recent statistics reveal that teams with a strong depth chart, particularly on the offensive line, have better odds of success in the league. According to a 2022 NFL study, teams with at least seven capable linemen saw a 30% reduction in quarterback sacks over the season. This kind of preparation might pay off for the Giants this year.
