The Tuk Tuk Operators Network is teaming up with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to push for cleaner transport in Kenya. They just launched a campaign to introduce electric tuk-tuks on Kenyan roads.
Vincent Were, chairperson of the Tuk Tuk Operators Network, shared that this move aligns with President William Ruto’s call for local solutions to climate issues. “We are excited about innovations that empower our operators with modern, affordable mobility options. Our goal is to reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality in our towns,” he stated.
This initiative supports Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and shows the country’s commitment to climate action. Samuel Musumba, NTSA’s Road Safety Manager, highlighted that adopting electric tuk-tuks is not just about new technology; it’s also about making transport cheaper and greener. He noted that as more people switch to solar and electric power, costs will decrease and investment in the sector will grow.
The partnership aims to create jobs for young people by promoting local assembly of these electric tuk-tuks. By doing this, it will also empower not just drivers but mechanics and technicians, providing a boost to the entire clean energy sector. Alpha E-Mobility is setting up battery swapping centers powered by solar energy, which will make it easier and cheaper for operators to run their businesses.
Kinyar Karang from Alpha E-Mobility mentioned that their electric tuk-tuks are designed to cater to the Kenyan market, promoting inclusivity, especially for female drivers. These electric models will feature spacious seating, charging systems, and other comforts for passengers. “Safety and durability are key, with features designed for stability and high-speed driving,” she added.
Currently, Kenya has around 205,000 tuk-tuks, especially in urban areas. Musumba pointed out the exciting leap as electric tuk-tuks might also serve as ambulances in the future. This innovation shows that the tuk-tuk sector is evolving rapidly.
The next step is the official launch of these electric tuk-tuks in Kisumu County on August 30, 2025. This initiative isn’t just about transportation; it’s about building a sustainable future for everyone.
