Join the Conversation at the SOAR Summit: University of the Cumberlands’ Students and Faculty Present ‘AI Café’!

CORBIN, Ky. — Students and faculty from the University of the Cumberlands took part in the 2025 Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) Summit. They hosted an AI Cafe, where they served coffee and shared exciting ways to use artificial intelligence.

University president-elect Quentin Young emphasized the importance of preparing students for the future. “To succeed, we need an educated and healthy workforce. Investments in infrastructure and education are key,” he said. “We can show students what’s possible.”

At the AI Cafe, various stations demonstrated practical AI applications. Students learned how to use AI for studying, building resumes, and searching for jobs. Educators also explored how AI can improve their teaching.

Ryan Hartzell, an instructional designer at the college, noted, “AI can enhance our services and courses. It’s not a crutch—it’s a valuable partner that can spark new ideas.”

This initiative aims to equip students for the evolving job market. Interestingly, a recent survey from the Brookings Institution found that 86% of workers believe digital skills will be essential for future job prospects. As the workforce changes, institutions like the University of the Cumberlands are stepping up to help their students adapt.

The SOAR Summit also featured the SOAR Inspires Awards, recognizing individuals committed to the development of Appalachia.
