Mother of University of Arizona Stabbing Survivor: ‘My Daughter Will Overcome This Challenge’

Teen Recovering After Stabbing Incident at University of Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – A week after a stabbing at the University of Arizona library, 17-year-old Aaniya Coley is recovering. Her mother, Christine Lindsey, shared the family’s shock regarding the incident.

Lindsey told 13 News that Aaniya feels numb. She was stabbed multiple times, suffering serious injuries, including a collapsed lung. The alleged attacker is Aaniya’s long-time boyfriend, Andreys Luis Arias, who is now facing charges for aggravated assault.

“This isn’t a stranger who did this,” Lindsey said. “We welcomed him into our home. It’s a different kind of pain.” She emphasized how close they were, highlighting that it could have been much worse.

Aaniya, described by her mother as a fighter, is determined to heal. “She will get through this,” Lindsey believes. As a senior in high school, Aaniya plans to join the ROTC Air Force after graduation in 2026.

Despite everything, Lindsey said Aaniya remains focused on her academics, even in the midst of this setback. The family is adjusting to this trauma, trying to support her as best as they can.

Lindsey was at work when she received the news from social workers about her daughter’s injuries. Grateful for community support, she urges everyone to cherish their loved ones. “You never know what can happen,” she said.

The statistics surrounding domestic violence are alarming. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence. This underscores the importance of awareness and action in situations like Aaniya’s.

As of now, Arias is not in custody and is being held on a $200,000 bond. The family continues to navigate this difficult path, leaning on each other and their community for strength.
