Pepperdine University mourns the loss of Thomas G. Bost, who passed away on August 23, 2025, at 83. He was a dedicated former chair of the Board of Regents and a beloved professor at the Caruso School of Law. “Tom Bost shaped Pepperdine profoundly,” said President Jim Gash. “His wisdom, faith, and devotion helped steer the University for over two decades.” Bost was known for his passionate commitment to teaching and for genuinely caring about his students, leaving a lasting legacy at Pepperdine.
Bost graduated summa cum laude from Abilene Christian University in 1964 and earned his juris doctor from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1967, where he was a standout student. He worked at Latham & Watkins in Los Angeles for 31 years before spending his later career at Pepperdine, where he served as a professor and held various administrative roles until his retirement in 2016.
His influence extended beyond Pepperdine. He was involved with the American Bar Association and the Los Angeles County Bar Association, shaping standards in tax practice. Bost also served on the Board of Trustees at Fuller Theological Seminary, demonstrating his commitment to education and faith.
He leaves behind his wife, Sheila Bost, their four children, and 12 grandchildren. A memorial service is set for September 13, 2025, at Culver Palms Church of Christ, welcoming all who knew him. The family encourages donations to scholarships and charities that reflect Bost’s values.
In 2021, a survey showed that over 70% of alumni felt Pepperdine had a significant impact on their lives. Bost’s work undoubtedly contributed to that feeling, showing how one individual can shape a community.
