Student Council kicked off the semester with excitement at the first general meeting. They launched the Cavalier Career Closet, a project aimed at making professional attire accessible for all students.
Clay Dickerson, the Council president and a fourth-year College student, mentioned that this was one of his main goals since taking office in April. He proudly announced that the career closet is now open for all students to use.
Micah Andrews, the Council’s chief of support and access services and also a third-year College student, shared that they invested $20,000 in a one-year partnership with My Career Closet. This company offers personalized styling services. With this funding, they will deliver 140 fitted outfits, host two styling events, and create an online platform with styling tips for students.
Currently, the career closet has also received donated business clothes from professors, staff, and community members. Andrews noted that more collaborations with local thrift stores and churches are in the pipeline. This partnership aims to bridge any gaps in clothing sizes and accessibility.
The closet is situated in the basement of Newcomb Hall, and students are welcome to drop by and choose outfits. For personalized fittings and styling sessions, appointments are required.
Lily Dorathy, a fourth-year Batten and College student, shared updates about Advisory Boards during the meeting. These boards include both students and staff, working together to tackle community issues. Applications for student representatives on the Safety and Wellness Advisory Board (SWAB) are open. Dorathy expressed the need for five students, stating that they have already received three applications. The application deadline is September 7, and selected representatives will serve until May 2026.
Dorathy emphasized that the goal is to cultivate a culture of caring and responsiveness throughout the University, ensuring every voice is heard.
Lastly, Michael Mitchell, the Council’s vice president for organizations and third-year Commerce student, reported that the Fall Activities Fair was a massive success, with more than 580 organizations participating. This fair was notably the largest in history.
As Student Council’s efforts continue, they will meet again for their next scheduled gathering on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
