Whistleblower Resignation Raises Alarms over Data Security at SSA
Charles Borges, the chief data officer at the Social Security Administration (SSA), has resigned after filing a whistleblower complaint about a serious security concern. He claimed that employees from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) uploaded sensitive Social Security data to an insecure cloud storage system.
According to Borges, this act puts millions of Americans’ personal information at risk. The Government Accountability Project confirmed his resignation, stating that they were providing legal support for Borges.
In response to the allegations, an SSA spokesperson insisted that the data is kept in a secure environment and has not been compromised. They added that the information is stored in a “long-standing environment” that is “walled off” from the internet.
The situation escalated in June when the Supreme Court allowed DOGE to access sensitive Social Security information, despite concerns raised by two labor unions and an advocacy group citing potential violations of the Privacy Act. A lower court had initially issued an injunction to block this access, but the appellate court supported the Supreme Court’s decision.
Borges stated in his resignation letter that he felt forced to leave due to SSA’s actions, which made it difficult for him to perform his responsibilities ethically. He described experiencing retaliation since raising concerns, including feelings of isolation and a hostile work atmosphere.
Andrea Meza, Borges’ attorney, expressed that he could no longer work at SSA with a clear conscience given what he witnessed. She emphasized that Borges would continue to cooperate with oversight bodies.
Before joining SSA, Borges had significant roles in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and served as a White House Presidential Innovation Fellow. His broad experience includes data management positions at several defense organizations.
