Three Scottish brothers made headlines by setting a world record for the fastest unsupported row across the Pacific Ocean. Jamie, Ewan, and Lachlan Maclean completed this incredible journey in just 139 days, rowing over 9,000 miles from Peru to Cairns, Australia.
They are the first team ever to finish the full crossing from South America to Australia. During their adventure, they faced fierce storms, seasickness, and even injuries. At one point, Lachlan was swept overboard! Despite these challenges, they raised over £700,000 (about $945,690) for clean water projects, aiming for a goal of £1 million ($1,350,450).
When they arrived at Cairns Marlin Marina, they celebrated by playing bagpipes and waving the Scottish, Australian, and UK flags. More than 50 family members, friends, and fans, including their mother Sheila, welcomed them back.
Just hours before landing, Ewan shared a lighthearted moment by calling the marina. He jokingly asked, “Do you have pizza and beer? I repeat, do you have pizza and beer? Over.” Ewan, 33, remarked that this journey was the toughest experience he had ever faced but couldn’t have done it without his brothers by his side. “We’ve shed tears of joy and laughed till our cheeks hurt,” he said.
Jamie, 31, shared their moments of concern. “There were times we thought we might run out of food,” he admitted. The ordeal gave them a new outlook on life. They plan to keep fundraising to provide clean water for about 40,000 people in Madagascar through their charity, the Maclean Foundation.
Here’s a surprising fact: the previous record for the fastest nonstop row across the Pacific was 160 days, held by Russian solo rower Fyodor Konyukhov since 2014. The Maclean brothers challenged themselves in a way few would dare to, pushing their limits while helping others around the world. Their journey reminds us of the power of teamwork and the difference we can make.
