WhatsApp has urged iPhone users to update their app immediately due to a serious cyber threat. This warning follows a targeted attack that may exploit a vulnerability known as CVE-2025-55177.
This flaw lets attackers send harmful content through seemingly innocuous links. As Donncha Ó Cearbhaill from Amnesty International noted, this “zero-click” exploit doesn’t require users to engage with the link to fall victim, making it particularly dangerous. “A malicious message could be sent to you, leading to potential device compromise without any interaction,” he explained.
The threat may affect not only iOS users but also Android users, contrary to WhatsApp’s current position. Ó Cearbhaill has shared warnings that indicate multiple users could be under threat.
Recent data highlights the increasing risks in this digital age. According to a report by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, international cybercriminal groups like “Scattered Spider” are intensifying their attacks on various sectors, including airlines. They employ social engineering tactics to manipulate IT staff into giving them access.
As for WhatsApp users, the company has suggested some steps for protection. If you receive a warning, a full factory reset might be necessary. Additionally, it’s recommended to keep both WhatsApp and your operating system up-to-date: at least version 2.25.21.73 for iOS and 2.25.21.78 for macOS.
