Empowering Lagos Youth: Your Role in Climate Action for a Sustainable Future

Youths in Lagos are stepping up to fight climate change and promote environmental sustainability. The Technical Working Group (TWG) from the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development has teamed up with the Inspired Youth Network to educate young people on eco-friendly practices.

Balikis Saludeen Ibrahim from TWG highlighted the importance of tree planting. “We want to create a greener, more breathable space,” she stated. The group is also planning a community clean-up on September 20. She emphasized recycling and adopting sustainable habits to help combat climate change.

Oluwatoyin Adejokun, the Program Manager, shared that this initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17, which encourages global partnerships. “Climate change requires ongoing effort. Every little action we take adds up,” she remarked.

The Deputy Chairman of the National Youth Council in Lagos, Olafaire Oladunni, noted that young people should take the lead rather than wait for government action. “Tree planting is essential. We must turn our voices into action. Agencies like LAWMA are here to support us,” she said.

Participant Joseph Sayejanmi called for schools and youth organizations to revive clubs focused on agriculture, scouting, and the environment. He believes these activities can keep the youth engaged in positive ways. “Clubs like these help foster interest in environmental issues and can lead to real change,” he explained.

Experts agree that youth involvement is crucial. According to a recent report by the United Nations Environment Program, young people are more likely to take action on climate change when engaged in community projects. Programs that empower youths can lead to long-term commitment and positive behavioral changes.
