Bangladesh faces serious challenges due to climate change. As a deltaic and lower riparian country, it ranks among the most vulnerable nations. Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan emphasized this during a recent ceremony hosted by the Swiss Embassy in Dhaka.
Rizwana highlighted that tackling the climate crisis requires collective knowledge and global solidarity. She stated, “Time is running out. We need to act together to ensure a safe future for generations to come.” Her words reflect a growing consensus among experts that climate action is urgent, with recent studies showing that the country is losing about 1.4% of its GDP annually due to climate-related impacts.
Bangladesh’s people are resilient, but their limits are being tested. Rizwana pointed out that financial and technological support from the international community is still lacking. She urged development partners to enhance their collaboration with vulnerable nations like Bangladesh to address these pressing challenges.
Interestingly, a report from the Global Climate Risk Index ranks Bangladesh as one of the top countries affected by climate change over the last two decades. This has sparked various grassroots movements and social media discussions aimed at raising awareness about climate actions. Rizwana also underscored the importance of cultural heritage in building resilience. “Our traditions can help us find solutions, no matter how dire the situation. With deeper community engagement and support, we can navigate through the storm together,” she said.
