Memorial Health Expands Emergency Services in Georgia

After five years of legal challenges, Memorial Health is finally moving ahead with plans for new hospitals in Pooler and Richmond Hill, Georgia. This effort aims to provide critical emergency care to communities that really need it.

At a recent news conference, CEO Brad Talbert expressed his relief about overcoming the legal hurdles. He highlighted how essential this expansion is for residents in Bryan County, western Chatham County, Richmond Hill, and Pooler. “These communities have waited a long time for emergency facilities,” he said, underscoring the importance of timely access to medical care.

The new facilities will work likean emergency room in a larger hospital. They’ll be staffed with certified emergency doctors and have essential services like trauma bays and stroke care capabilities. Talbert emphasized a unique feature: “If a patient needs to be admitted, the transport to the hospital is free. They’ll go straight to a room without waiting.” This could significantly ease the burden on patients during stressful times.

However, this expansion faced strong opposition from competitors like St. Joseph’s/Candler and other nearby hospitals. These organizations argued that such free-standing emergency departments (FSEDs) could lead to higher costs and complications for patients. Scott Larson, a PR manager for St. Joseph’s/Candler, stated that they feel FSEDs aren’t the right solution for improving access to care. “We believe in responsible expansion of emergency services,” he said, indicating that their focus will remain on a balanced approach to healthcare within the community.

The recent decision by the Georgia Supreme Court to not review the case marked a turning point. This ruling allowed Memorial Health to secure the necessary certificates to move forward with its projects.

In terms of broader trends, emergency services are evolving across the country. According to the American Hospital Association, the number of FSEDs has surged in the past decade, reflecting the growing demand for immediate medical care in diverse communities. More than 850 FSEDs operate nationwide today, emphasizing the shift toward making emergency services more accessible.
