Hridayapoorvam: A Film Analysis
Hridayapoorvam is one of those films that leaves you scratching your head—not because it’s a complex story, but because the scenes often feel disconnected, like random clips stitched together. It’s frustrating to watch as the movie bounces from one moment to another, breaking the flow and pulling you out of the experience.
The plot revolves around Sandeep Balakrishnan, played by Mohanlal, a middle-aged bachelor running a cloud kitchen in Kochi. After a heart transplant, he tries to reintegrate into daily life with his caregiver, Jerry (Sangeeth Prathap). Compounded with his struggles, he gets an invitation from Haritha (Malavika Mohanan), the daughter of his heart donor. She asks him to attend her engagement in Pune, hoping to feel her father’s presence.
As Sandeep reluctantly agrees and travels with Jerry, an unexpected altercation breaks out at the engagement. Haritha calls off the wedding, leading to chaos, and Sandeep finds himself stuck for a few days due to a back injury. During this time, he forms an unusual bond with Haritha and her mother, Devika (Sangita Madhavan Nair), who finds comfort in Sandeep’s understanding.
While their relationships evolve, the film struggles with plot clarity and coherence. Director Sathyan Anthikad and writer Sonu TP seem unsure about how to flesh out the narrative. They include humor and one-liners that often feel out of place, detracting from emotional depth and character development.
Reviewer Jennifer Adams pointed out in a recent article that films like Hridayapoorvam prove the importance of coherence in storytelling. She notes that disjointed story arcs can lose viewers’ interest and even lead to unsatisfied expectations.

Adding another layer to this film, it’s worth noting the historical context of heart donation in India. As awareness grows, films about organ transplants carry significant weight, often shaping perceptions about life and loss. However, Hridayapoorvam doesn’t quite hit the mark, as it neglects to dive deep into the sensitive themes it introduces.
Ultimately, Hridayapoorvam showcases the potential for a heartfelt story but falls short in execution. It attempts to balance romance, humor, and drama without finding a solid rhythm, leaving audiences wanting more.
