Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling Men’s Soccer team is excited to kick off their 2025 season at home against CAL-U on Thursday at 7 PM. After last year’s ups and downs, they’re ready to make a fresh start with some promising young talent.
The Cardinals are welcoming back players who have grown through their time in the program. Over the past two seasons, they’ve doubled their wins, and they’re not stopping there. With eight new freshmen joining the squad, the team is bolstering its lineup and hoping to build on last year’s foundation.
Last season, the Cardinals began with a solid 1-1 tie against CAL-U but struggled as they jumped into conference play. They found their footing in tough matches, managing a couple of ties against Point Park and Davis & Elkins, and securing their first conference win against Point Park later in the season. They finished the 2024 season on a high note with another victory, this time against Salem.
Key players returning this season include Jon-Michael Gordon, who missed 2024 due to injury. He tallied four goals and two assists his freshman year. Alongside him is Jordan Taylor, recognized on the 2024 MEC All-Freshman team after leading the team with 21 shots. Together, they aim to provide a dynamic offense.
In goal, Daniel Delo is back after a strong debut season. He recorded an impressive 64.9% save percentage, ranking fourth in the Mountain East Conference (MEC). Delo’s consistent performance helped keep the scores low in many matches, and he’s ready to be a wall again this year.
Looking ahead, the Cardinals are eager to build on their previous encounters with CAL-U. Last year, despite being outshot 12-3, they held CAL-U to a tie until late in the game. This season, with new talent joining the squad, they hope to boost their scoring.
Kickoff is at 7 PM at Bishop Schmitt Field. The team is looking forward to a fresh start and exciting matchups ahead.
