SEATTLE — The Seahawks have signed right tackle Abraham Lucas to a three-year, $46 million contract extension. This move shows the team’s confidence in his recovery from knee surgery.
Lucas, 26, had a standout rookie season in 2022 after being drafted in the third round. However, injuries have limited him to just 13 games over the last two seasons. After undergoing surgery in January 2024, he described his recovery as a “long and painful process.” Despite these challenges, he participated fully in training camp and didn’t miss any spring practices, suggesting positive progress in his health.
This extension is significant. Lucas is only the second offensive lineman drafted by the Seahawks since 2010 to receive a rookie contract extension, the first being Justin Britt in 2017. With an average of $15.33 million per year, Lucas now ranks as the 13th highest-paid right tackle in the NFL.
Lucas was part of a notable 2022 draft class that saw all six of its first-round picks become starters. As these players reach contract eligibility, more extensions may be on the horizon. General manager John Schneider has hinted at possible discussions with safety Coby Bryant, another member of that draft class, although no agreement has been reached yet.
Experts believe that investing in players like Lucas can significantly impact a team’s success. According to a recent survey by Pro Football Focus, teams that prioritize retaining young talent often see improved performance on the field over the following seasons.
