The United States is gearing up to host the 2026 Group of 20 (G20) summit at Trump Doral, the golf course and spa located in Florida. This choice aligns with a vision President Trump suggested during his first term in office.
Trump shared the news directly from the Oval Office. Kevin Hassett, the National Economic Council Director, will lead the summit planning. His efforts will focus on enhancing economic growth by reducing regulations, ensuring affordable energy, and fostering innovation.
The summit is set for December 14-15, 2026. Importantly, the White House claims that the event will be held “at-cost,” meaning no profit will be earned from government funding or foreign governments.
Previously, Trump intended to host the G7 summit at this venue in 2020, but the plan was dropped due to public backlash over ethical concerns. Instead, the G7 meeting transitioned to a virtual format as COVID-19 took hold.
Trump Doral, which he bought for $150 million in 2012, opened its doors in the 1960s. The resort features four golf courses, a large spa, and extensive event spaces, attracting visitors from all over. It sits in a busy area of Miami, close to the airport.
The G20 includes 19 countries and two groups: the European Union and the African Union. Together, they represent around 85% of global GDP and over 75% of international trade. As the G20 continues to grow, it has become more globally inclusive compared to the G7.
This year’s G20 will occur in South Africa this November, though Trump has expressed reluctance to attend due to tensions over agricultural issues involving White farmers in the country. Interestingly, host nations can also invite other states to participate as observers. Trump has already reached out to Poland’s newly elected president, Karol Nawrocki, for the 2026 summit.
The U.S. administration plans to adopt a more focused approach for this summit, aiming to simplify discussions and emphasize core G20 goals like economic stability. As a result, the guest list may be smaller than in previous years.
To provide some context, past G20 gatherings have attracted large delegations and extensive media coverage, making it one of the world’s most significant economic forums. However, experts argue that the effectiveness of these meetings hinges on genuine collaboration rather than mere ceremonial exchanges.

As the 2026 summit approaches, it will be interesting to see how these historic discussions evolve and what impact they have on global economic policies.
