Governor Hochul Boosts Vaccine Access with New Executive Order Amid Washington Uncertainty

In the face of challenges to science and healthcare, New York Governor Kathy Hochul is taking swift action to protect vaccine access for residents. Recently, she signed an Executive Order allowing pharmacists to administer COVID vaccines. This move aims to ensure every New Yorker who wants the vaccine can get it easily.

Governor Hochul expressed her commitment to New Yorkers, saying, “In the absence of federal leadership, we must do everything we can to ensure that New Yorkers have access to the vaccines and preventive healthcare they have come to rely on.”

Governor Hochul’s Executive Order directly addresses these issues by declaring a statewide emergency for 30 days. It allows physicians and nurse practitioners to prescribe COVID vaccines and enables pharmacists to administer vaccines to a broader range of patients, including children and pregnant individuals. This means no eligible New Yorker will have to face delays in getting the vaccine in their community.

In addition, the state is working on a more permanent legislative solution to ensure ongoing vaccine access. This will include vital healthcare roles, immunization schedules for schools, and insurance coverage.

The Governor’s Executive Order has several key accomplishments:

• Physicians and nurse practitioners can now prescribe COVID vaccines for patients aged three and older.
• Pharmacists are empowered to administer the vaccine to this age group as well.
• For the first time, pharmacists can independently prescribe COVID vaccines.
