Hyderabad: Indian filmmaker Anuparna Roy made history at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival by winning the Best Director award in the Orizzonti (Horizons) section for her debut feature, *Songs of Forgotten Trees*. This is a landmark moment, as it’s the first time an Indian director has received this prestigious honour at Venice.

A Historic Moment

Wearing a beautiful white saree, Anuparna walked to the stage with tears in her eyes as French filmmaker Julia Ducournau, the jury’s president, announced her win. In her acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude, saying, “This film is a tribute to every woman who’s ever been silenced, overlooked, or underestimated.” Her heartfelt words aimed to inspire more female voices in cinema and beyond.

Despite production challenges, producer Bibhanshu Rai stated, “We held on because this story had to be told.” Fellow producer Romil Modi emphasized that supporting women like Anuparna is important.
