Big Changes Ahead: Nova Launcher’s Founder and Sole Developer Moves On

After a significant shake-up at Nova Launcher, the future of this popular Android app hangs in the balance. Kevin Barry, the founder and the last developer still involved, recently left the company. This comes after being requested to stop working on the launcher and its potential open-source transition.

Nova Launcher, once a beloved tool for customizing Android devices, is facing uncertainty. Currently, its official website shows a 404 error, but users can still download the app on Google Play.

Branch Metrics acquired Nova in 2022. At the time, Alex Austin, the CEO, assured users on Reddit that if Barry ever left, the code would be made open-source. However, Austin left Branch in 2023, and with Barry’s departure, it raises questions about whether this promise will hold.

Cliff Wade, a former customer relations lead, shared his thoughts with The Verge. He observed that the new leadership has shifted focus away from Nova Launcher. “It’s just an app they own but no longer want,” he noted.

Wade suspects that Branch may not prioritize open-sourcing Nova anytime soon. “They might not care unless they feel pressure from the community,” he stated. In response, users have launched a Change.org petition urging the company to follow through on its earlier promises.

The open-source software movement has gained traction as more users demand community control over digital tools. A study by the Open Source Initiative revealed that 90% of developers believe open-source software allows for greater innovation. In this context, users feel they have a stake in Nova’s development.

Wade emphasized that the community deserves transparency and action from Branch. “They need to honor what was previously promised,” he concluded.

As the situation unfolds, many will be watching closely to see if Branch will respond to the growing calls from the community.
