Chennai’s Tamil Nadu government has just rolled out two significant initiatives aimed at tackling pollution and restoring vital ecosystems along the Manali-Ennore coastal belt. This area is not only industrialized, with petrochemical plants and thermal industries, but it also hosts important waterways like Ennore Creek and Kosasthalaiyar River. Unfortunately, these natural resources have suffered greatly from pollution and encroachment.
The first initiative is the Manali-Ennore Restoration and Rejuvenation Company (MERRC). This initiative, created as a not-for-profit organization by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, aims to clean up the area and protect local communities who rely on fishing for their livelihoods. Recent reports indicate that the fishing community has been hit hard, particularly following an oil spill in 2023 that exacerbated existing environmental crises.
Finance and Environment Minister Thangam Thennarasu emphasized that this council is a crucial step towards a sustainable future, addressing everything from industrial pollution to fragile marine ecosystems. The plan includes restoring mangroves, managing solid waste, and ensuring safer industrial practices.
To ensure the fishing community’s involvement, the Fisheries Department will keep a register of local fishers and promote sustainable fishing methods. Monitoring systems will also be put in place to control harmful discharges into local rivers.
Alongside MERRC, the Tamil Nadu Marine Resource Foundation (TN-MRF) was launched, with a budget of ₹50 crore. This foundation focuses on conserving marine life, including dugongs and coral reefs, while also promoting eco-tourism. It encourages local communities and research institutions to get involved, bridging science and local knowledge for better outcomes.
Moreover, during the initiative launch, 333 new staff members were appointed in various forestry roles, targeting boosted efforts in conservation and biodiversity protection.
In addition to these initiatives, the Tamil Nadu government has highlighted the importance of engaging youth in sustainability efforts. For instance, the 2025 Meendum Manjappai Awards encouraged schools to eliminate single-use plastics, promoting a cleaner environment.
These new programs reflect a collective effort to restore damaged landscapes and promote sustainable practices in Tamil Nadu.
