A new committee focused on green and low-carbon technologies was launched in Beijing. This initiative aims to help China meet its ambitious climate goals and contribute global solutions for a greener future.
The Green and Low-Carbon Technology Application Committee, part of the Innovation Method Society and backed by the Ministry of Science and Technology, is key to China’s efforts to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060.
Director Zhu Junhao, who is also the CEO of Green Technology Bank (Shanghai), spoke at the launch, emphasizing how crucial low-carbon technologies are for sustainable growth. However, he pointed out a hurdle: the technology transfer rate is under 30%. Though there’s strong policy support, real-world application is still tough.
To address these issues, Zhu advocated for a partnership involving the government, industry, and investment. This collaborative effort could help overcome the challenges in making low-carbon technologies commonplace.
Liu Yanhua, a former vice minister of science and technology, praised the committee as a starting point for innovation against climate change. He noted that traditional strategies aren’t enough anymore. We need fresh solutions that span technology, policy, and operational models.
Zhu Xian, a former vice president of the New Development Bank, expressed urgency in the fight against climate change. He highlighted that while rising energy demands—partly driven by artificial intelligence—pose risks, innovative technologies could offer solutions. China’s progress in low-carbon tech might play a vital role in global efforts.
Ji Tao from China Daily noted that as the largest developing nation, China aims to achieve its carbon neutrality goal faster than any country in history. This requires sustained and intense effort.
The committee’s main goal is to encourage the development and use of low-carbon technologies. By fostering research and innovation, it hopes to propel China’s transition to a greener future.
During the launch, China Daily also introduced the Green China International Communication Portal. This platform will share stories and best practices on sustainable development, fostering global conversation.
Overall, this committee marks an important step in China’s journey toward a low-carbon economy, showcasing the nation’s commitment to combat climate change and share its solutions with the world.
