New Jersey is making it easier for people to get COVID-19 vaccines. The state health department recently announced that anyone over six months old can receive a vaccine for the 2025-26 season. They also provided a new order allowing pharmacists to give the shot without needing a patient’s prescription.
This change follows new guidance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). While the FDA approved updated vaccines for seniors, access for younger adults and children was limited. The state’s actions aim to remove those barriers, ensuring everyone in New Jersey who wants a vaccination can easily get one.
“As COVID-19 cases rise across the country, I am committed to making sure that all New Jersey residents can receive their COVID-19 vaccinations from trusted health professionals,” stated Gov. Phil Murphy.
Deputy Health Commissioner Dr. Novneet Sahu emphasized the importance of vaccination. “Vaccines are crucial to minimizing outbreaks and protecting individuals and communities. They reduce the impact on schools, workplaces, and our healthcare systems,” he said.
The health department stresses that it’s vital for everyone to stay updated on all recommended vaccinations, especially with cold and flu season around the corner.
However, the new directive doesn’t guarantee insurance coverage for the vaccine. Since the FDA released its latest guidelines, some other states, like New York, have also expanded vaccine access.
In the past couple of years, vaccination efforts and strategies have evolved, especially during the pandemic. Initially, there were strict age restrictions, but as more data became available, health experts recognized the importance of broader access to help control the virus’s spread.
Recent surveys indicate that vaccination rates in younger populations remain a concern, with only around 35% of parents planning to vaccinate their children in the upcoming season according to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation. Public health experts continue to advocate for vaccines, highlighting their role in preventing severe illness and hospitalizations.
