CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has launched two important initiatives aimed at boosting environmental and climate action. The Manali Ennore Restoration and Rejuvenation Council (MERRC) and the Tamil Nadu Marine Resource Foundation (TN-MRF) were introduced during an event at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai.
Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu kicked off the initiatives, while Forests and Khadi Minister Raja Kannappan handed out appointment orders to 333 newly hired forest personnel. Earlier this year, 1,413 forest staff were brought on board as part of World Environment Day celebrations.
The MERRC was created after the December 2023 oil spill at Ennore and aims to restore the delicate Manali-Ennore area. A new office has opened in Tondiarpet to oversee these efforts.
The TN-MRF is backed by a budget of ₹50 crore for the 2025-26 financial year. This foundation focuses on protecting marine and coastal ecosystems. Its key goals include the conservation of dugongs, mangroves, coral reefs, mudflats, and beaches. It also promotes sustainable fishing and eco-tourism while fostering partnerships with research organizations and civil society. During the event, the Manjappai Awards were given to schools and colleges that embraced single-use plastic-free policies.
Supriya Sahu, the Additional Chief Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forests, highlighted that these initiatives reflect a strong approach to governance that blends restoration with conservation. They underscore the importance of community involvement, as seen in social media discussions about the need for sustainable practices and local environmental care.
Recent statistics from a national survey show that 70% of Indians support stricter environmental policies. This growing awareness points to a significant shift in public opinion, reinforcing the relevance of Tamil Nadu’s initiatives. As eco-consciousness rises, more residents are participating in activities like beach clean-ups and wildlife conservation efforts.
