Mumbai: The Indian Army Sailing Vessel (IASV) ‘Triveni’ is about to make waves, but it’s more than just a ship. It’s a powerful symbol of women’s achievements in India. This unique mission will see ten women officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force embark on a world tour from the Gateway of India in Mumbai on September 11.
According to the Ministry of Defence, this voyage will cover 26,000 nautical miles and navigate through some of the toughest waters on Earth, including the Southern Ocean and the Drake Passage. The mission, expected to take around nine months, will see the crew visiting four foreign ports before returning to Mumbai in May 2026. It’s a journey of skill, resilience, and teamwork.
The ship’s name, ‘Triveni’, represents the unity of the three armed services. This expedition is a significant milestone in India’s maritime history and highlights the strength of women in uniform. Team Triveni includes five Army officers, one Naval officer, and four Air Force officers. It’s the first time the Indian Armed Forces are collaborating on such a circumnavigation mission.
Training has been intense. Squadron Leader Vaishali Bhandari, part of the crew, shared that they have trained for two and a half years, mastering essential skills like sailing, navigation, and medical aid. “We’ve traveled 4,000 nautical miles during our training,” she noted, reflecting on their groundwork from Mumbai to various destinations.
The mission’s leader, Lieutenant Colonel Anuja Varudkar, explained that they’ll visit Fremantle (Australia), Littleton (New Zealand), Buenos Aires (Argentina), and Cape Town (South Africa). The goal is to share experiences of marine biodiversity and environmental insights with India afterward. The team has prepared for various weather conditions, ensuring they’re ready to face challenges at sea.
This expedition transcends sailing; it’s about showcasing India’s evolving maritime power and celebrating women’s empowerment, or Nari Shakti, on a global stage. The Defence Ministry emphasizes that missions like this reflect the nation’s resolve to navigate toward an Atmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India.
